*Sis, save this blog post for future reference.*
Your cap size means everything when shopping for wigs. You don't even have to know your full set of measurements - just be sure to know your circumference and your front to nape. If you are seeking a custom unit, then yes - be sure to note each of the measurements shown in the photo above (screenshot it from the newsletter homepage). However, if you're shopping leisurely, most retailers *should* note the unit's cap size (extra small - 20"-20.5", small - 21"-21.5", medium - 22"-22.5", large - 23"-23.5", or extra large - 23.75"-24") in the description box, and if they didn't, the unit is most likely 21-22 inches, which is standard, or the average size head.
Unless custom or otherwise indicated, our units are made with a circumference of 22-22.5 inches so our customers have enough cap space for comfortable braid downs, etc. but this is also why we install elastic bands on our units, because they help to ensure security, optimal placement, and fit.
Here are three tips for capturing your correct wig cap size:
- When capturing your circumference, make sure you are wearing your hair the same way it would appear under your wig (flat braids or flat twists are best). Take your tape measure and start at the center of your forehead, at your hairline. Pull the tap measure behind your ear until it reaches the nape of your neck. Then, continue pulling it around the nape of your neck until it reaches your other ear. Bring the ends of your tap measure around to meet, again in the center of your hairline at your forehead. Record your measurement.
- When capturing front to nape (also known as front to back), place one end of the tape measure at the center of your forehead, at your hairline. Pull the tape measure over your crown and directly back, until you reach the nape of your neck, or the base of your hairline. Record your measurement.
- Always measure at least three times to ensure you're capturing the right measurements.
- [Bonus Tip!] Go with the larger measurement if you get a number that reads in between.
With these tips, you are sure to rock a style that is comfortable and optimal for YOU. Never be afraid to ask the retailer what size the cap is before purchasing your unit. If you are inside the store, ask if you can try the unit on (follow ALL sanitary, health guidelines first) because once you leave that store, you will not be able to return it.
